DHHS Awarded $8.5 Million in Federal Grant to Support Children's Behavioral Health
The Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) announced that Maine will receive more than $8.5 million in federal funds to improve behavioral health services for children in their homes and communities, particularly in underserved areas of the state.
The DHHS Office of Child and Family Services will use the funding to accelerate its ongoing work to improve services for children and youth facing mental health challenges.
The grant from the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) will provide $8,584,058 over four years. DHHS will use a portion of the first year of funding, totaling $1,477,750, to focus investment in Piscataquis, Penobscot, and Aroostook counties, which are historically underserved for children's behavioral health care. That includes hiring a Youth Peer Specialist and a Parent Peer Specialist in each of the three counties to provide direct support to children and families as they navigate the children's behavioral health system.
More broadly, the grant will support implementation of a roadmap developed by the Office of Child and Family Services to improve access to high-quality children's behavioral health services, which is based on a comprehensive evaluation of community-based services statewide. The evaluation identified systemic issues related to access in rural communities.
The SAMHSA System of Care grant will support implementation of some of the roadmap's strategies, including expanding and bolstering services, coordinating children's clinical care across providers, engaging families in services, data-informed decision making, evidence-based practices, improving quality, and developing the workforce serving children and families. These strategies are designed to support the long-term availability of high-quality prevention and treatment services for children in their home communities.
Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Announces 2020 Agricultural Development Grant Awards
The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) announced its latest round of Agricultural Development Grant (ADG) program awardees. For 2020, eleven Maine agricultural producers and organizations are sharing a total of $472,736.96. Recipients include Aroostook Hops, LLC; Atlantic Sea Farms; Blue Barn LLC dba Bluet; Daybreak Growers Alliance; Maine Cap 'N Stem LLC; Maine Rice Project; New Roots Cooperative Farm; Somali Bantu Association of Maine (Liberation Farms); Springtide Organics LLC, the University of Maine System; and the Wild Blueberry Commission of Maine. The full list of projects and grant awards are detailed on the ADG webpage. DACF's 2020 ADG call for proposals yielded 45 responses.
Established by the Maine Legislature in 1996, the ADG program funds projects that accelerate new market development, the adoption of improved technology, and the promotion of agricultural products produced in Maine. Grants are awarded every one to two years through a competitive proposal process.
License Renewals Encouraged Before Final Waiver Deadline
The Secretary of State is encouraging Mainers to renew their licenses and State IDs ahead of the grace period deadline, to avoid long waits and renewal delays.
The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles will soon resume sending out notices to those with expired licenses and upcoming renewals, encouraging them to renew now rather than wait until the renewal grace period ends, which is currently August 9, 2020.
The online license renewal service https://www10.informe.org/online/bmv/dlr/ is available to most license and ID holders, within 6 months prior to your credentials expiration date. The driver license vision test requirement is waived during this time, to allow more people to use the online service.
Those who cannot use or access the online service should call the Bureau of Motor Vehicles License Services Division at 624-9000 Ext. 52114. Phone lines are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and calls are answered in the order received. BMV staff will process renewals over the phone whenever possible or set up in-person appointments at your local BMV branch as necessary.
Executive Order No. 18: Maine drivers licenses and State IDs that expired during the emergency period (since March 15, 2020 and later) are extended until 30 days after the end of the civil emergency. The Governor extended the state of emergency on Wednesday, June 10 for an additional 30 days. Thus, the deadline to renew expired licenses and IDs is August 9, 2020.
