The project is substantially complete!
Contractors with PBOT completed installation of high-visibility crosswalks and green bike boxes in early October.
In total, the project:
Upgraded crosswalks to high-visibility crosswalks at 22 intersections
Installed new green bike boxes at 3 intersections
Upgraded 561 signs throughout the corridor to be larger and more visible

Construction Update - September 7, 2023
Contractors with PBOT are continuing nightwork this month and installing high-visibility crosswalks along 82nd Avenue. In addition, green bike boxes will be installed this month.

Construction Update - August 21, 2023
This week contractors with PBOT started installing high-visibility crosswalks at 21 signalized intersections on 82nd Avenue as part of the 82nd Avenue Critical Fixes: Signing and Striping Updates Project. Adding high-visibility crosswalks at intersections with traffic signals help make pedestrians more visible to people driving.
In addition to high-visibility crosswalks, green bike boxes will be installed on SE Woodstock, SE Duke, and SE Flavel at the intersection of 82nd Avenue. Green bike boxes will help improve safety and visibility of people bicycling across 82nd Avenue at these locations.
Construction impacts
This work will continue through September and work will primarily take place on weekdays at night from 8pm to 5am. Occasional daytime and weekend work may also take place.
People driving, taking public transit, walking or bicycling across should expect brief lane closures and crosswalk closures while this work is being completed. We ask the public to travel slowly and cautiously around the work zone, observe all directions by flaggers and use alternate routes if possible.

Contractors with the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) are completing signing updates this month.
Contractors are preparing to begin striping updates in the coming weeks. The project team will provide a construction schedule as soon as it is available.

Construction Update - May 1, 2023
Contractors with the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) begin sign upgrades this week as part of the 82nd Avenue Critical Fixes: Signing and Striping Project. Contractors started work at the north end of the corridor, near NE Lombard Street, and are working their way south, finishing at SE Clatsop Street.
This work will involve brief rolling lane closures. Pedestrian access will be maintained. The traveling public is advised to expect delays while repairs are being made. As always, please keep crews safe by following all traffic control signs and flaggers while travelling through or near work zones.
Work is expected to continue through May.
Project overview
As part of this project, PBOT will make critical safety improvements to 82nd Avenue, including updating street signs and striping on 82nd Avenue between NE Lombard Street and SE Foster Road.
PBOT will:
- Update street signage
- Install high-visibility (continental) crosswalks at signalized intersections
- Provide spot fixes to existing median islands to improve visibility
What are high-visibility crosswalks and how are they different?
High-visibility crosswalks (sometimes called “continental-style” crosswalks) have thick lines parallel to traffic flow that allow drivers to see the crosswalk from further away. This gives drivers more time to stop safely for pedestrians crossing, or waiting to cross.
Adding high-visibility crosswalks at intersections with traffic signals help make pedestrians more visible to people driving.

About Building a Better 82nd
A critical north-south connection and one of Portland’s high-crash corridors, 82nd Avenue is in urgent need of significant investments to improve safety and address maintenance issues. As of June 2022, ownership of 82nd Avenue transferred from the state to the Portland Bureau of Transportation.
Critical Fixes Now
PBOT is investing $80 million in 82nd Avenue to deliver critical fixes now. The needed basic safety and maintenance repairs to the corridor include paving, crossings, lighting, safety improvements at intersections, and sidewalk improvements.
Future Investments Next
After making the most critical repairs, PBOT will invest $105 million in future investments for a better 82nd Avenue. Over the next two years, PBOT will conduct broad and inclusive community engagement and work directly with community-based organizations and agency partners to determine what the bureau should focus on for improving 82nd Avenue long-term.
