The unemployment rate remained level at 3.0% in Minnesota in January, on a seasonally adjusted basis.

The number of unemployed decreased to 92,898 and the number of employed increased to 3,050,513. The labor force grew to 3,143,411, and the labor force participation rate ticked up to 68.1%.

The U.S. unemployment rate decreased to 4.0% in January, on a seasonally adjusted basis. The labor force participation rate also ticked up to 62.6%.

Monthly Employment

Minnesota’s monthly job growth was positive in January as the state added 9,600 jobs, or 0.3%.

Eight of eleven published supersectors posted positive growth. Construction added 1,200 jobs; Trade, Transportation and Utilities added 700 jobs; Information added 500 jobs; Financial Activities added 100 jobs; Professional and Business Services added 1,900 jobs; Education and Health Services added 4,300 jobs; Leisure and Hospitality added 800 jobs and Other Services added 500 jobs.

Two published supersectors posted decreases. Manufacturing lost 300 jobs and Government lost 100 jobs.

Employment in Mining and Logging was flat.

U.S. total payroll employment was positive in January, adding 125,000 jobs, or 0.1%. Private sector employers added 81,000 jobs (0.1%) on a seasonally adjusted basis. Minnesota outperformed the nation in six supersectors, and in total nonfarm and private sector employment growth.

Annual Employment

Minnesota over the year (OTY) payroll employment growth stood at 46,785 or 1.6%, higher than December’s 1.2%. The private sector added 34,610 jobs, or 1.4% in January, which was higher than December’s 0.9%.

U.S. total nonfarm over-the-year job growth stood at 1.4% in January, higher than in December Private sector employment growth was at 1.4%, also higher than the December rate.

Seven of eleven published supersectors in Minnesota added jobs over the year. Mining and Logging added 293 jobs (4.9%); Construction added 3,934 jobs (3.3%); Trade, Transportation and Utilities added 2,342 jobs (0.4%); Education and Health Services added 28,315 jobs (4.9%); Leisure and Hospitality added 3,930 jobs (1.5%); Other Services added 3,011 jobs (2.7%) and Government added 12,175 jobs (2.9%).

Manufacturing lost 2,647 jobs (0.8%), Information lost 198 jobs (0.5%), Financial Activities lost 2,182 jobs (1.2%) and Professional and Business Services lost 2,188 jobs (0.6%).

Five supersectors showed strength over the year in Minnesota compared to the nation. Mining and Logging was up 4.9% (versus -0.3%), Construction was up 3.3% (versus 2.3%), Education and Health Services was up 4.9% (versus 3.8%), Other Services was up 2.7% (versus 1.7%) and Government added 2.9% (versus 2.0%).
