Seattle Office of Arts & Culture (ARTS) is at the heart of fostering a city driven by creativity, providing opportunities for all to engage in diverse arts and cultural experiences. We handle the city's public art program, cultural partnerships grant programs, ARTS at King Street Station, the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute, and the Creative Advantage initiative. The department is recruiting employees for two similar vacancies. 

Job Responsibilities

Join the dynamic Public Art Team at ARTS and become a catalyst for creative expression and equitable cultural engagement in our vibrant city. The Public Art Project Manager will handle and shape approximately 10-15 diverse public art projects, including permanent installations, temporary exhibits, and community engagement initiatives. You will collaborate with internal and community partners to own the development and implementation of innovative public art programs that reflect our commitment to racial equity and social justice.

 

This is more what you’ll be doing daily:

 

Project Management:

  • Handle 10-15 public art projects (permanent, temporary and community engagement) in various stages, scales, budgets, and timelines.
  • Develop and coordinate project contracts, scopes, schedules, and budgets.
  • Ensure compliance with project goals, ADA, and applicable codes.
  • Coordinate with city departments, contractors, and community members.
  • Present issues, projects, and recommendations to advisory committees.
  • Conduct project evaluation, assessment, and documentation. 

Art Program Development:

  • Conduct needs assessments and consultations.
  • Establish project goals, budgets, and implementation plans.
  • Ensure projects reflect city Race and Social Justice Initiative goals. 
  • Prepare written materials such as press releases, grant proposals, and brochures.
  • Conduct research to inform program development and budget expenditures.

Artist Selection:

  • Develop selection criteria and conduct applicant outreach.
  • Provide technical assistance and facilitate selection panels.
  • Coordinate the artist selection process with a racial equity lens.

Community Engagement:

  • Conduct public involvement and outreach processes.
  • Engage the public in consensus and community-building activities.
  • Coordinate workshops and lead public forums.

Qualifications

You will be most successful in this role if you have the following experience, skills, and knowledge:


  • Proven experience selecting and working with public artists to develop and implement site-specific and design-team based public art commissions. 
  • Professional expertise in contemporary art theory, history, and visual arts.
  • Ability to read architectural documents. 
  • Proficiency in public speaking, contract negotiation, and budget development.
  • Ability to meet multiple deadlines and be highly detail oriented. 
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to complete assignments independently with minimal guidance. 
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce and community.
  • Proficiency with computer applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Photoshop.

 

In addition to the qualities mentioned above, you will need to possess the below required qualifications:

 

Two (2) years of full-time professional experience in public art project management including experience with arts organizations, or construction, architectural, landscape architectural project management or art event management in the public realm,

 

AND

 

A baccalaureate degree in Fine Arts, Arts Administration, or a related field,

 

OR

 

A combination of education, training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class.

 

License, Certification and Other Requirements:

 

Current State of Washington driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

Additional Information

This full-time and full benefits eligible position is classified as an Arts Program Specialist. It is covered by the Civil Service System and FLSA (eligible for overtime payment). The full pay range for this position is $40.01 - $46.71 hourly. Current City employees’ starting rate of pay will be based on Personnel Rules regarding promotions.

 

This position offers the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. Employees will be expected to work in the office two days a week. Telework option is available 3 days a week under current City of Seattle policy. Individual schedules will be based on agreement between the employee and their supervisor. This position may need to work occasional evenings/weekends.

 

Applicants must successfully pass a background check, which will be conducted in accordance with Seattle’s Fair Chance Employment Ordinance, SMC 14.17. Applicants will be given a chance to explain or correct background information and provide verifiable information of good conduct and rehabilitation.

Submission of Driver’s License Record Review is required for the successful candidate.
