Center for Climate Resilience and Decision Science

CCRDS
CCRDS brings together over 20 years of applied decision science with world-class climate science for immediate, actionable climate resilience solutions.

CCRDS Enables Leadership Decision Making

The Center for Climate Resilience and Decision Science (CCRDS) is located at Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, Ill. that is home to cutting-edge scientific facilities such as Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF), Argonne Visualization Lab and Argonne’s Studio for Augmented Collaboration (STAC). CCRDS aims to increase the resilience of built and natural infrastructure systems to the impacts of a changing climate through advancing the integration and application of climate projections and the decision sciences.

  • CCRDS serves as a hub expanding the ability of federal, state, local, and private sector decision makers to make more immediate, science-based decisions about how they adapt their infrastructure assets and systems.
  • CCRDS continually advances decision science to better support climate-resilience applications.
  • CCRDS channels emerging adaptation science and modeling needs from governmental and non-governmental decision-makers to climate scientists to inform research priorities.

CCRDS Addresses Climate Challenges

CCRDS directly addresses these barriers to actions:

  • Adaptation of the legacy built-environment poses unique and enormous challenges due to how extensively these systems have been built out over decades and how diverse their functions are.
  • Decision-makers don’t have access to climate projection data at the right scale or type for them to make actionable risk-informed adaptation decisions about existing infrastructure nor design new infrastructure for the next 100 years of a changing climate.
  • Access to data alone isn’t enough because data does not equal decisions, but requires context, expertise and collaboration to reach meaningful outcomes.
  • Enable more immediate climate adaptation actions for infrastructure and the built environment of data, tools, applied science.
  • Scalability of infrastructure resilience and adaptive solutions.

CCRDS Features and Capabilities

  • 25+ years of broad-based, resilience-related decision science and application experience — data, models, analysis, and technical assistance — for the public and private sectors in enhancing the resilience of U.S. and international infrastructure assets and systems under adverse conditions.
  • The highest resolution, dynamically downscaled climate data available for North America.
  • Unique and proprietary power sector (e.g., electric grid, natural gas, petroleum), communications and other critical infrastructure models and tools for assessing risk and vulnerability at multiple levels asset, system(e.g., systems-of-system).
  • Translating regional climate projections into risk and impact analyses for critical infrastructure, performing more than 80 U.S. regional assessments of infrastructure resilience for transportation systems, water resources, cross-border energy, communications systems and beyond.
