Bosnia’s Southern Herzegovina Region Battles Wildfires

Wildfires have been raging for several days near Mostar and other towns in Bosnia’s southern Herzegovina region but firefighters assisted by army helicopters have managed to contain the biggest blazes.

No victims have been reported and no houses have been destroyed.

In the area north of Mostar, a wildfire that spread from the Rujiste mountain pass was put under control on Sunday overnight before it reached holiday homes in the area, Petar Juric of Mostar’s fire brigade told the klix.ba news site.

“We have managed to localise the most critical part and to defend the settled area, but the fire is still active,” Juric said.

Between Jablanica and Konjic, some 40 kilometres north of Mostar, firefighters have tamed a wildfire in the Kostajnica region with the help of helicopters which flew dozens of sorties. However, some fires are in remote areas that are hard to access and in other places, strong winds have made firefighters’ work harder.

One Bosnian Army helicopter has been deployed since Friday and Montenegro sent three specialist firefighting helicopters to help over the weekend.
