Elliot Park Athletic Field Grand Opening

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is proud to host a grand opening ceremony commemorating the completion of the new Elliot Park athletic field on Saturday, September 19 at 10:30 am.

The new synthetic turf field replaces a battered grass field that had fallen into disrepair. Its high-quality, resilient playing surface has larger dimensions (70 x 115 yards) that give youth and adults competing in MPRB leagues an opportunity to compete on an NCAA-level facility.

“This field adds a durable, first-class amenity right in the heart of Minneapolis,” said MPRB Commissioner Anita Tabb. “I’m thrilled to see all of the hard work on this project come to fruition and am sincerely grateful for our many partners who helped make it happen.”

Hennepin County provided a youth sports grant and neighboring North Central University (NCU) raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to help fund the project. The NCU women’s and men’s soccer teams use the field for practices and games.

Other potential uses for the multipurpose field include MPRB fundamental baseball, lacrosse and football. It can also be converted into two youth soccer fields.

The grand opening ceremony – scheduled almost one year to-the-date after a ceremonial groundbreaking was held – features light refreshments and face painting and temporary tattoos for children. MPRB Commissioner Tabb and Hennepin County Commissioner Peter McLaughlin will give short speeches followed by a ceremonial goal kick and MPRB youth soccer game.
