The 87th Texas Legislature passed House Bill (HB) 1525, which amends state law related to weighted funding for students who take career and technical education (CTE) courses. The legislation establishes that, beginning with the 2021-22 school year, for each full-time equivalent student in average daily attendance in an approved CTE program in grades 7 through 12, a district is entitled to weighted funding as follows:

  • 1.1 for CTE courses not in an approved program of study;
  • 1.28 for levels one and two CTE courses in an approved program of study, as identified by the agency; or
  • 1.47 for levels three and four CTE courses in an approved program of study, as identified by the agency.

An alphabetical list of current CTE courses and their designated weights is available at https://tea.texas.gov/academics/college-career-and-military-prep/career-and-technical-education/cte-programs-of-study

Lists of courses and weights by CTE career cluster and program of study are available at https://tea.texas.gov/academics/college-career-and-military-prep/career-and-technical-education/approved-cte-programs-of-study

Visit the TEA website to access a Programs of Study overview and learn about the methodology that was used for determining programs of study. For more detail about how programs of study were developed and approved, you can also review the Texas State Plan for Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act (Perkins V). Additionally, specific information for each program of study is available at https://tea.texas.gov/academics/college-career-and-military-prep/career-and-technical-education/approved-cte-programs-of-study.

Recognizing that adjustments to programs of study will be necessary as career opportunities and workforce needs continue to evolve, the agency will adopt rules to guide future updates to the CTE programs of study, including courses included in each program of study.
