State Historic Preservation Office
The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) evaluates, protects and promotes Michigan’s historic built environment and archaeological sites. We lead this effort by helping property owners, developers, and local and state agencies identify and seize opportunities to celebrate and rehabilitate historic places that define local communities and make our state uniquely Michigan.
SHPO staff work in a hybrid environment and are most easily accessible by direct email. Looking to do research? As of January 24, 2025 our process has changed as we prepare to move to a new database platform. Section 106 applications may be submitted electronically. General inquiries may be sent to preservation@michigan.gov. We invite you to explore our Programs and Services below to learn more about historic preservation in Michigan.
Historic preservation is a way of understanding history through the very places where events happened, and people stood. How can historic preservation benefit underrepresented communities, who have often been marginalized in National Register nominations and the larger story of our shared history?
The Michigan SHPO is committed to recognizing the history of the state’s underrepresented communities, growing the number of diverse nominations submitted to the National Register, and connecting individuals, non-profits, and local groups with preservation incentives and resources. This bulletin explores some of the opportunities available to help tell a fuller story of Michigan's history.
