Parent carer quote

It’s so hard, sometimes, as a parent of a child with additional needs. It’s been brilliant to see our children have fun and make new friends, and to bond, laugh, cry with other parents that have similar challenges.

  • Young Carers Action Day is in 2 days!

    Theme “Give me a Break”

Young carers frequently share that they are dedicating more and more time to caring responsibilities at home. What they truly need is a break!

Such a break would allow young carers to enjoy some valuable time just being young and spending time with friends, free from the responsibilities of being a carer.

*Jordan cares for their sister who has schizophrenia. They assist her with meal preparation, medical appointments, and provide emotional support.

With the Time to Live grant, Jordan purchased headphones and a Spotify subscription.

"I love music because I can take it anywhere with me, when it suits me! At home, on a walk, or on the bus, I can just put on my headphones, and it instantly boosts my mood and makes me feel so much better."

  • Friday Feature - Better Breaks 🧩

"We're using the short break money next week and we also had a visit with the Parent Carers Group trip to the Safari Park. All these wonderful things make a hard time much, much better and it's so nice when you guys call and it's about something fun, or positive, and it's such a nice change from
recounting medical history, discussing medicines and arguing /advocating. Thank you all for what you do, and I only wish I'd found your support earlier in the process."

Alyson, mum to Lachlan (who has non-verbal autism, additional learning needs, and mobility challenges), has been supported by us for over two years.

For many families, enjoying a day out together is not always easy. Our events provided:
✅ A space where carers and children felt understood and accepted
✅ A chance to connect with other families in similar situations
✅ A break from the daily challenges of caring.

Thanks to Better Breaks funding, we’ve been able to provide much-needed breaks for unpaid parent carers, their cared-for children, and sibling carers. These breaks offer families respite from caring responsibilities and the chance to spend quality time together in a safe and supportive environment.

Between March – September 2024, we organised exciting activities, chosen based on carer feedback:
🎟 Jump n Joy – Fun for siblings & cared-for children while parents relaxed
🦁 Safari & Adventure Park – A dream day out for families who might not otherwise afford it
🎈 Wacky Play – Soft play fun for young children, giving parents time to chat
🎳 Family Ten Pin Bowling – Competitive and fun for all!
⚽ Sports Classes – Partnering with Active Stirling to support carers & children with a specific sporting interest

  • 📰Response to the Ministerial Statement: Future of the National Care Service

Following the statement by Maree Todd MSP earlier today on the future of the National Care Service, we welcome the Scottish Government’s ongoing commitment to introducing a Right to a Break for unpaid carers.

The introduction of this right will represent a significant step forward for carers in Scotland and is a recognition of the importance of short breaks in giving carers time to rest, recharge and balance their caring responsibilities with other aspects of their lives.

The successful delivery of a right to breaks from caring relies upon the existence of a sustainable short breaks sector able to meet the diverse needs of carers and those they care for.

We recognise the immense strain the sector currently faces with rising costs, diminishing income and increased demand. The uncertainty surrounding the future of the National Care Service has amplified this. We hope therefore that this renewed commitment to the right to a break will encourage Scottish Government and politicians across all parties to work together to ensure the swift implementation of this right and commit to the sustained investment that it needs to succeed.

Colin Smith (Manager) and Sharron Farrell (Carer Engagement Lead) from North Lanarkshire Carers Together with be joining us at this month's event, to share their collaborative work on ‘Carer Breather’ services in North Lanarkshire.

In July 2023, North Lanarkshire Carers Together (NLCT) launched their new referral guide for 'Carer Breather' projects across North Lanarkshire for 2023-2025. 'Carer Breather' projects support unpaid carers to have time out of their caring role in their local communities, or North Lanarkshire wide, depending on need. Some services offer carer-specific support, while others provide support to carers and the person they care for together. There are 11 funded projects for 2023-2025 and carers can self-refer to a 'Carer Breather' service.

In June 2024, North Lanarkshire Carers Together successfully secured continued and enhanced investment from University Health & Social Care for the Carer Breather programme. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to supporting carers in North Lanarkshire, ensuring they have access to crucial short break opportunities as part of a broader strategy for prevention and early intervention.

A story from Edinburgh Leisure’s ASN Multi-Sports Sessions

@ed_leisure offers Saturday morning multi-sport sessions designed for children and young people aged 7-17 with physical and learning disabilities. These sessions, funded by Better Breaks, provide primary and teen groups with a supportive and inclusive environment to explore a range of sports they love.

This year, teens enjoyed a special trip to Gracemount Leisure Centre's gym! Many discovered a newfound love for gym equipment, and the experience has boosted their confidence to try new things.
With ongoing financial challenges due to COVID-19, the energy crisis, and the cost of living, Edinburgh Leisure needs external funding to keep these vital programs going. Better Breaks funding has been essential in making this consistent, impactful service a reality for local families.
This support has allowed Edinburgh Leisure to create lasting memories and positive impacts for children and young people with additional needs.

Freya’s mum, Anna, sees a huge difference in her daughter’s happiness and motivation on session days. Freya loves choosing her clothes and packing her bag, especially when she knows karate is on the schedule. It’s extra special since her brother practices taekwondo—she’s proud to show off her new skills at home!

“We were so happy sitting together in the hotel, watching the boats coming and going in the harbour. It brought back many happy memories from previous trips for us both, it has given us both a much-needed boost”

  • 🌟Friday Feature - Respitality🌟

In February 2023, a carer and her daughter went on a three-night break to Invermay, organized by Angus Carers Centre. Ann, from the centre, swiftly arranged the getaway, sparing the carer from excessive paperwork and hassle.

Before the break the carer had been feeling isolated (she was also worried about how her daughter would be) and was worried about managing her meltdowns, and that she may not sleep in an unfamiliar environment.

“The opportunity to go away someplace fairly close to home to test the water. I invited a friend and her two ASN children to join us. It's hard for single parents to take our children away someplace. So, this was close enough that we could come back if it didn't go well. But it went amazingly. The kids were all comfortable and settled and it has shown us that we could manage to take them away as two single Mum's who only have each other for support.

After her break away, the carer said she felt recharged and energised, she enjoyed time out for herself & is now feeling more positive about her caring role, she felt less anxious, stressed, and tired. The break helped to reduce her social isolation, building connections with other single parents facing similar challenges. Describing the break at Invermay as "5-star," she is now motivated to plan regular breaks in the future.

Thanks to Angus Carers Centre, this not only offered a break from daily challenges but also helped the carer to embrace her role with positivity. 💫

    Making Memories

*Sydney in his 80s, cares for his wife with dementia. Their lives have changed a lot of over the past few years, and Sydney’s caring responsibilities have increased, he now must supervise almost all tasks, which he feels sad about.

Sydney talked with the centre, and he told them that he wanted to have a break to one of their favourite places an island that they had visited many times before, he was supported with the grant to use the money to pay for the ferries and the hotel.

“We were so happy sitting together in the hotel, watching the boats coming and going in the harbour. It brought back many happy memories from previous trips for us both, it has given us both a much-needed boost”

“We are both so grateful for the grant as this trip is precious to us the break has meant that we can still spend time together”

  • 💠Carers' rights day💠

    Protecting Carers’ Rights to Breaks

    Reading time 2' 📑
On Carers Rights Day, we reflect on the vital role unpaid carers play in our society and the rights they deserve to maintain their health, well-being, and quality of life. One of the most important of these rights is access to meaningful short breaks, which provide carers with the time to rest, recharge, and balance their caring responsibilities with other aspects of their lives.

However, the Scottish Government's plans to enshrine this right in legislation are under serious threat. Rising costs, diminishing income and increased demand are placing immense strain on the short breaks sector, and the continuing delays to the National Care Service Bill - where the Right to Breaks is embedded - create uncertainty about when, or even if, this vital right will be fully realised.

The government’s commitment to introducing a Right to Breaks for unpaid carers represents a significant step forward in recognising and supporting carers’ rights. However, the sustainability of this promise relies heavily on the existence of a robust and well-supported short breaks sector. Without urgent action to address the financial viability of these services, the Right to Breaks risks becoming a right in name only.

We welcome the Scottish Government’s efforts to raise concerns about the proposed National Insurance increase with the UK Government, highlighting the disproportionate financial impact this decision is having on charitable organisations, including those providing short breaks. We also support the SCVO campaign calling for an exemption for charities to help alleviate the financial pressures on essential services.

While this decision is ultimately a UK Government responsibility, the Scottish Government must also take proactive steps to support the short breaks sector. This means introducing targeted financial support for providers, offsetting rising costs, and offering strategic assistance to ensure the sector’s sustainability.

Additionally, it is crucial that all political parties overcome their differences to ensure that the Right to Breaks is not indefinitely delayed by the ongoing hold-up of the National Care Service Bill. Regardless of the future of the broader National Care Service legislation, cross-party support is essential to progress this critical aspect of the Bill and ensure unpaid carers are not left waiting any longer for the support they need and deserve.

On this Carers Rights Day, we therefore urge the Scottish Government and politicians across all parties to prioritise unpaid carers by committing to fast-tracking the implementation of the Right to Breaks and ensuring sustained investment in the providers essential to delivering this support.

  • Friday Feature - Creative Breaks 🧩

Inverness Caledonian Thistle Community Development Trust’s Para Phootball project is transforming lives, one kick at a time. Thanks to an award of £22,499, the initiative has provided meaningful short breaks for 31 carers and 33 cared-for individuals through the power of football.

Every Monday, participants gather at the Inverness Leisure Centre Astro pitches for 90-minute football sessions, and over six weekends throughout the year, they embark on day trips to Grangemouth to compete in a football league. While the cared-for individuals enjoy playing the sport they love, carers are given valuable time to unwind, whether that’s exploring local parks, relaxing in cafés, or making use of nearby leisure facilities.

This project is unique in the Highlands, offering an inclusive and supportive space for people with disabilities while ensuring carers get the personal time they need. The team takes a tailored approach, making sure that each participant’s experience is as fulfilling and enjoyable as possible. They believe their work particularly supports ‘personalisation’ and ‘adding value’—not just to individuals but to the wider community.

Take *Emma, for example. Having experienced significant bullying in the past, she often felt vulnerable and isolated. But through Para Phootball, she found a space where she was not only included but truly valued. The sessions gave her the chance to play a sport she loves while forming genuine friendships, boosting her confidence, and helping her feel a sense of belonging. This positive change has had a ripple effect on her family, who have seen her become more engaged, active, and happy.

Her story is just one example of the transformative power of sport and community. Through initiatives like this, carers and the people they care for are gaining vital opportunities to connect, grow, and thrive.

"I'm very thankful to have been given the opportunity to attend all of the event The Richmond Fellowship Scotland held this year. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to meet others and have some time out for myself. The staff were just so helpful in giving me the opportunity to just have some ME time and doing things that were enjoyable”

The Richmond Fellowship Scotland East Renfrewshire Dementia Service Carers Together hosted a series of quarterly events for both carers of those living with dementia and their loved ones. The events throughout the year included a pamper event for carers whilst those they care for enjoyed a simultaneous afternoon of music and fun at a Christmas party. In December a bus trip to Largs, where carers/cared for got to go their separate ways for a fun day out with a tasty lunch provided and a stroll along the promenade. This evoked many happy memories from everyone's childhood.

They also arranged an afternoon at the local theatre for carers and cared for and the groups were seated separately in the theatre as this allowed the carers to relax and enjoy the performance. Their final event in September they planned a trip doon the canal with the Seagull Trust, but they were unable to fulfil this, after discussion with the carers they decided on a visit to Glasgow Transport Museum.
East Renfrewshire Dementia Service has been supporting John and his wife Eve for a number of years following John's diagnosis of dementia. After speaking with their keyworker about this Creative Breaks programme, Eve said they would be thrilled to take part and that the events had absolutely helped her to step away from her caring role and afforded opportunities to attend enjoyable events and activities.

A story from the Families Programme by Angus Carers Centre!

This year, Angus Carers Centre made a big difference in the lives of families with additional support needs, running 45 activity sessions and special sensory room experiences to bring families together and offer a much-needed break. Despite a few cancellations due to weather and scheduling issues, they exceeded expectations and achieved all their goals.
Through activities ranging from outdoor adventures to cozy film nights, families from across Angus have found a supportive space. The programme is designed to accommodate different ages and interests, with sensory kits always on hand for those who need them.

    Ben's story
Amy’s son Ben, who has ASD and ADHD, found his place at the Families Programme’s movie night. Usually finding social situations challenging, Ben amazed everyone with his creative clay toys, sparking a lasting friendship with another boy, Chris. They now call each other “bro” and look forward to meeting up—a friendship that has brought so much joy and connection!

The programme gained recognition through Tesco’s Stronger Starts initiative, allowing customers to vote in support of this incredible work.
The recent improvements to Short Breaks Funds, including a user-friendly online application and reporting system, have made the funding process smoother, with resources like toolkits and info sessions adding even more support.

The Families Programme is more than just activities—it’s a place where friendships blossom, connections are built, and families find a community that truly understands their journey.

  • Friday Feature - Respitality 🧩

"It was like being wrapped up in a huge, safe, luxurious blanket for a few days. I’m so incredibly grateful."

For Kim, a dedicated carer juggling a year of challenges and big changes, life has been anything but easy. As a carer, Kim is deeply involved in her family’s daily life, navigating sleepless nights while supporting her son through his recovery from whooping cough. The relentless demands of caregiving, combined with the emotional toll of losing her beloved dog, had left her drained and in desperate need of respite.

Through Respitality, Kim and her family were offered a break at Annfield House in Callander—a stunning retreat that brought much-needed relief and comfort.

The timing was magical. Autumn leaves painted the surroundings in vibrant colors, and Bracklinn Falls, just behind the house, offered a serene escape. The town of Callander was alive with the sounds of its annual jazz festival, with music filling the streets, creating a joyful atmosphere.

For the first time in months, Kim enjoyed uninterrupted sleep, as the spacious layout allowed her the rare luxury of rest on a separate floor. The family even connected with the house’s owners, who showed incredible trust and kindness by allowing them to care for their cherished pointer dog. Although they couldn’t take the dog for a walk due to her arthritis, the gesture touched Kim deeply, bringing back memories of her own beloved pet.

“Trying to tell you how amazing and so needed this break was doesn’t do it justice. I don’t have the words. Thank you so, so much.”

  • Time To Live - Friday Feature 🧩

“This was a brilliant experience, and it was great to try something a bit different and fun. I knew my son was safe and being well looked after, this break gave me a complete rest from my everyday. I was able to fully relax knowing he was comfortable and happy”.

*Tracy a full-time unpaid carer for her adult son who has a severe learning and development disability. He requires support with every daily task, cannot be left alone and requires constant support when outside the family home to keep him safe. Tracy is his sole carer, and this means she has little time for herself. She does not really have much of a social life and struggles to see friends which is quite isolating.

With some respite arranged for her son, Tracy used the Time To Live grant for a weekend getaway with her friend on a murder mystery weekend.

Tracy now accepts support from the carers centre and is more involved in the groups available and is making full benefit of the help, support, and advice available.

  • Friday Feature - Better Breaks 🧩

"The funding from Better Breaks has been instrumental in allowing us to continue this vital service for families in the local community. It has also enabled us to upskill our staff, ensuring they are equipped to manage the complex needs presented by our participants."

Mid Argyll Youth Development Services (MAYDS) is making a big difference in the lives of families through their Time Out project, funded with £8,387 from Better Breaks.

Their weekly Youth Sessions, designed for children and young people with Additional Support Needs (ASN), run every Saturday during term time and on weekdays over school holidays. These sessions provide a safe space for fun, connection, and learning, with tailored support—often on a one-to-one basis—ensuring every child can fully participate.

MAYDS has also introduced free swimming and soft play sessions at MAC Pool for children and families, creating opportunities for bonding and inclusive fun. The funding has helped sustain these vital services and upskill staff, allowing them to meet the complex needs of participants.

The impact is clear. Demand has grown so much that a waiting list is in place, with plans for a third weekly session. For families like Sofia*’s, the difference has been life-changing. Previously isolated, she now attends weekly sessions, has made friends, and participates in activities she couldn’t before. Her mum describes it as a lifeline, providing her daughter with joy and giving her much-needed respite and time to connect with others.

MAYDS is building a stronger, more inclusive community—one family at a time.

  • Friday Feature - Respitality 🧩

“I am ever so grateful for this opportunity. It allowed me as a parent carer to spend time with all 3 of my children in a relaxed, calm environment. It was perfect. Thank you very much my batteries are recharged.”

Lauren is deeply committed to supporting her daughter Moira, who has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and pathological demand avoidance.
Every morning, Lauren rises early, knowing that it can take hours for Moira to feel ready for school. Her daughter’s sensitivities, such as only wearing specific clothing and avoiding unfamiliar toilets, add challenges to their routine.

Despite these challenges, Lauren manages all of her daughter’s personal care, tries to prepare her for appointments, and pays close attention to her emotional triggers. Whilst providing emotional support, it was identified that the carer needed a short break. Eventually Lauren could access a 7 nights self-catering stay at Wyndham Duchally for 6 people through Respitality. This break offered Lauren and the family some relief, as her daughter’s escalating behaviours have become increasingly difficult to manage.

"The location of the lodge was perfect. Its right in between the swimming pool and the games area/restaurant. The swimming was great for my kids. No big ques. Staff were amazing and very accommodating."

  • 🌟Friday Feature - Respitality🌟

At Quarriers, we're dedicated to supporting young carers and their mental health. In addition to the challenges of growing up and getting an education at school that every young person faces, young carers have the added everyday pressure of worrying about those they provide support for.

In an effort to improve wellbeing and give young carers a chance to get away from it all for a day, Quarriers Carer Support Service (Moray) took eight to experience the Highland Wildlife Park at Kincraig near Aviemore. Tickets kindly donated by the Park via the Respitality programme allowed for free entry, the weather was perfect and everyone was amazed at the magnificent range of animals on show from polar bears to snow leopards and cubs.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we were able to treat eight young carers to a day at The Highland Wildlife Park. The experience gave these young carers a chance to unwind, have fun, be part of a group and get some ‘me’ time. They got a change of routine from their daily lives.

Here's what some of them had to say:

👉 "It made me feel a lot better."
👉 "I enjoyed time with the other young carers and was proud to be able to get my mam and dad a gift."
👉 "This break allowed me to do something interesting that would not normally happen in my normal routine which means a lot."

And it wasn't just the young carers who benefited. Parents noticed the positive impact too:

👉 "Getting her out of the house allowed her to be less isolated being around other children. It let her be a child again. It gave her the ability to switch off, and know that the world won’t fall apart if she’s not at home."
👉 "She had a great time and was able to enjoy herself and leave home behind."

A big thank you to The Highland Wildlife Park for their kind donation.

  • Protecting Carers’ Rights to Breaks
