On June 13, 1925, the Monte Rio Packing Association in Newcastle nearly packed one full railcar in one day. Community packing houses like the Monte Rio provided land to camp on and tents for workers to live in during packing season.
The Monte Rio Packing plant estimated it would ship 100,000 packages of the choice Covered Wagon and Sierra brands of fruit this season. They employed 22 workers in mid-June of 1925 but added more as the season progressed.
There were successful fruit ranches all over Placer County from the Gold Rush into the modern era. This Saturday, you can visit the Bernhard Museum during the Heritage Trail Museums Tour and learn about a 19th century fruit ranch. Children can also build their own replica fruit crates and even use fruit labels reproduced from vintage Placer County labels in our collection like this Covered Wagon label from 1928.
