Featured story
An extraordinary effort is underway to contain the growing Mosquito Fire near Foresthill, now at 29,585 acres with 0% containment. Structures have been destroyed and damaged within the fire perimeter, and CAL FIRE damage inspectors are now starting to assess that damage. We’re deeply grateful for the heroic efforts of our first responders to help keep our communities safe.

On Sept. 5, 1961, four former Sierra College students embarked on the adventure of a lifetime. David Holsclaw, Don Springer, Dale Claussen and John Knox flew to Luxembourg, where they purchased bicycles to explore Europe on two wheels. The plan shifted to hitchhiking across Europe and Asia for three of the boys after they reached Copenhagen, Denmark. Claussen continued his biking journey through Europe with an Australian, Peter Bryant.
Holsclaw and Springer contracted malaria in Pakistan where they were hospitalized and later flew home in December. In February of 1962, Claussen returned to Auburn but Knox, who became mesmerized by the incredibly interesting Istanbul, Turkey, remained. He taught English there for nine months before continuing his own adventure. According to Knox: “I hitched back through Greece, Yugoslavia and Italy and took a boat to North Africa. Hitched across Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco. Algeria was in an interesting state at the time as their war of independence had just ended. Then up through Spain and France to England where I lived for several months. I sailed from England to Canada and finally took a Greyhound [bus] home.”
It was a life-altering adventure. John Knox met his future wife at a youth hostel in Greece and made lifelong friends in England. The journey shaped his later education. He majored in anthropology, returned to Turkey to do research on rural to urban migration and used his education and experience to teach social studies for 31 years before retiring from Weimar Hills Junior High School. Since 2008, he has been a volunteer at the Archives and Research Center for Placer County Museums.
