The September 15, 1949 Auburn Journal reported that the “Pioneer Kitchen” display set up by a committee of the Placer County Historical Society at the California State Fair was being dismantled and reassembled in the Placer County Museum in the Auburn fairgrounds to be displayed during the Twentieth District Agricultural Fair, which opened Sept. 16.
|
The display was two-fold in that it contrasted an 1849 kitchen with a “modern” 1949 kitchen. It’s unclear if the “modern” kitchen was installed alongside the 1849 kitchen in the museum as it was at the State Fair.
This display was one of the many ways the area celebrated the centennial of the Gold Rush and was the second of three centennials celebrated in the state. The first was in 1948, which celebrated the centennial of the gold discovery and the third was in 1950, which celebrated the centennial of California statehood. To learn more about our Gold Rush history, please visit our Gold Rush Museum. |
