On Jan. 1, 1941, Placer County Sheriff Elmer Gum died. Gum had been elected sheriff in 1918 and served until his death. He previously served as deputy sheriff for about 14 years.
Before coming to Auburn in 1897 to work for the A.W. Kennison Company, Gum lived and worked in San Joaquin and Monterey counties as well as Illinois, where his father moved the family from to California when he was a youth. Gum initially trained to become a pharmacist, but changed course when his father became ill.
Sheriff Gum was a well-known and respected lawman throughout California as well as most western states. He worked on several high profile criminal investigations such as the Alma Bell, Arnold and Sayer, and Earl Bud Kimball cases. Gum was the last Placer County sheriff since the courthouse opened in 1898 to serve his full term in the office on the first floor.
