State Nursing Continuing Education Requirements

MLA reviewed the continuing education requirements for all 50 United States and the District of Columbia. We offer our interpretations of whether their laws allow offerings approved for Illinois CNE to meet their continuing education requirements for one or more category of nurse (e.g., RN, LPN). We present our findings organized in the following categories:

  • Accept Illinois CNE: States that accept continuing education approved by a board or an agency that regulates a health care profession or encompasses Illinois CNE in some other way.
  • Do not accept Illinois CNE: States that do not say they accept out-of-state continuing education or describe acceptable continuing education in a way that excludes Illinois CNE.
  • No CE requirements: States that have no nursing CE requirements or only requirements for pain management or other very specific training.

Each state name is linked to the document we used to draw our conclusion.

We advise course owners and learners to confirm our interpretation of statutes by checking the nursing continuing education requirements for the state, professional organization, or certifying body of interest before assuming that offering or taking an Illinois CNE course will serve your purpose.

Please share with the  MLA Professional Development Department any information that may lead us to revise our categorization.
