The Office of the Insurance Commissioners (OIC) Climate Summit Series is back in 2023 with new interviews, webinars and presentations.

Commissioner Kreidler’s Climate Summit Series is a video series featuring experts on climate change — and how the insurance industry can help address the most pressing climate problems of the day.

The first entry in the Commissioner's 2023 Climate Summit Series comes from the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (ibhs.org). IBHS President & CEO Roy Wright discusses the "why" behind wildfire losses and what the IBHS has learned, through its research facility, about how wildfires behave and what homeowners can do to prepare for wildfires and mitigate losses.

The second entry in this year’s Climate Summit Series comes from Insurance Journal (insurancejournal.com). Commissioner Kreidler took part in an hour-long webinar, ‘Sustaining Sustainability: How the Insurance Universe Deals With Evolving Risks and Dispositions,’ hosted by Insurance Journal’s Western Region Editor Don Jergler.

Samantha Dunn, Vice President of Sustainability for Swiss Re Group, and Steven Rothstein, managing director of the Ceres Accelerator for Capital Markets at Ceres, were also a part of the panel.

The webinar, recorded in late June, focused on what insurers are doing to mitigate climate change, a regulator’s perspective on insurers and climate change, underwriting and fossil fuels, sustainable investing, and Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures reports.

The Climate Summit Series also features an introduction to Carbfix, an Icelandic company working to turn captured C02 into stone underground. This interview between OIC Senior Climate Policy Advisor Jay Bruns and Carbfix's Edda Björk Ragnarsdóttir took place in Orlando in December 2023.

The 2023 series wrapped up with an in-depth look at the Methow Valley Climate Action Plan. In October 2023, the OIC worked with the Methow Valley Citizens Council (resilientmethow.org) to learn more about its Climate Action Plan and the people in Twisp and Winthrop working on projects that support the initiatives explored in the plan. The CAP was drafted by a task force of community members and finalized in 2021. The collaborative effort formed into Resilient Methow, a community-driven project of the MVCC.

Over the past six years, the Commissioner’s annual Climate Summit has featured insights from climate scientists, researchers tracking public attitudes toward climate change, insurance executives addressing climate change, leaders of Tribal communities being affected by climate change, and state and national elected officials working to address climate change. The 2023 Climate Summit Series builds on what we’ve explored in previous years.

We'll add each video in our 2023 Climate Summit Series to the OIC's YouTube page (youtube.com) and the OIC's podcast feeds (anchor.com). The full series is free to watch and we’ll notify you when new videos are posted.
