Crisis De-escalation

Description

De-escalating a crisis is a very difficult skill set and starts with the hospital worker calming themselves and maintaining their composure as they approach the situation. Fear elicits a threat response in both the child and the person providing services. This means that without specific strategies it is common for the worker to inadvertently worsen the situation as they react to the “noise” of the situation. This class presents a three-step model of intervention to help guide the upset child back into their rational brain.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe a brain model for understanding what’s happening in a crisis
  • Pause to center oneself and slow down proceedings
  • Listen with empathy for meaning and need
  • Respond to what’s needed, not react to what’s happening
