Creating Diagnostic Formulations in IEP Assessments

Description

Mental health interventions work best in a school setting when they correspond to the educational deficits outlined in the IEP. When the mental health professional can show how poor performance in class is related to a student’s inability to self-soothe when stressed or manage emotions when upset (rather than a low IQ or similar measure), the special education team can create an IEP that makes sense for that individual student. A student may need direct one-on-one instruction from a support person, but also learn better when they are with their peers. Decisions related to this are outlined in the IEP based on medical necessity to improve the student’s ability to learn and thrive in school.

Learning Objectives

  • Examine how special education and mental health professionals work together to make assessments and recommendations
  • Seek assessment of the services that a student may need
  • Write diagnostic formulations so that they correspond to the IEP
  • Work as a team to make a plan that best fits the needs of the student
