We have become one of the country’s top training providers for people who work with vulnerable young children

We are one of the few councils in the country to become accredited in delivering a new qualification which helps children with additional needs.

What does the qualification provide?

The qualification provides a high level of knowledge and skill for Early Years Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators who work in Kirklees nurseries. We have already completed a successful training programme for 25 Early Years professionals and is now planning to run another next year. As a result, Kirklees children with special educational needs (SEN) are receiving high-quality support, helping to ensure the best start in life.

Cllr Viv Kendrick, Cabinet member for Children, said:

“We are delighted to be training a network of people who do so much for our vulnerable young children. Together, we are making a huge difference in the lives of children and their families.

We have seen a lot of interest from Early Years workers in the private, voluntary and independent sector who are keen to develop new skills and practices. The first trainees made a huge commitment by gaining the new qualification, often completing assignments in their own personal time over a six-month period.

Along with the council, they have shown a high level of dedication in helping children with SEN to develop, achieve and enjoy positive experiences. We want all children to be successful in their own ways and we are delighted to be one of the councils who are leading the way nationally in providing this support.”
