The new assessment centre being set up at Shrewsbury Town FC’s stadium on Oteley Road

Shropshire Council’s streetworks team has been working closely with the NHS and highways contractor Kier to supply the signage and equipment needed at the new drive-through coronavirus assessment centre at Shrewsbury Town Football Club’s stadium.

The assessment centre will provide face-to-face assessments for suspected coronavirus patients, and has been designed and implemented by the NHS CCGs. It will be operating Monday to Friday, including Bank Holidays, between 8am and 7pm.

Equipment supplied to the site by Shropshire Council includes 150 traffic cones, 50 pedestrian barriers and around 50 sandbags.

Steve Davenport, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for highways and transport, said:

“This is a really good example of successful partnership working – ensuring priorities are met within a very short timescale and in difficult circumstances.

“We were contacted a week ago by the NHS co-ordinator asking for our help with the manufacturing and supplying of bespoke directional signs to the site, and also asking for equipment and advice to ensure there is safe access to – and exit from – the site.

“The specific directional signs were manufactured and placed at strategic junctions by an Inspector within three days – followed by a further site meeting between council officers and NHS colleagues to determine requirements and draw up a traffic management scheme, and the equipment needed.

“Our partners Kier sourced and delivered the equipment to site yesterday [Wednesday] and officers will today be ensuring the site is set up safely to requirements, and draw up a traffic management scheme, and the equipment needed.

“I want to thank all involved for their help.”

The assessment centre is strictly appointment-only, for patients who have been directed there by their GP practice.

Patients who think they are showing symptoms of coronavirus, if needing further help because their symptoms or illness are continuing beyond usual timescales or in severity, should contact NHS 111 online in the first instance.
