  • Maryland Among Top 10 in Census Response Rate: Governor Hogan and Secretary McCord quoted.  Maryland reached the top 10 areas in the nation for self-response for the 2020 Census. The 67.6% self-response rate is well above the national response rate of 63.4%. Maryland ranked fourth in the U.S. in internet response. Carroll County leads the state with a self-response rate of 79.2%, ranking 26th in the U.S. out of more than 3,200 counties. Cumberland Times-News (August 21, 2020)

  • Maryland Officials Urge Residents to Fill Out 2020 Census: It is a rush to the deadline as states across the country are urging their residents to fill out their 2020 census before the deadline date, September 30. The date was moved to a month sooner than previously announced by the US Census Bureau. “When a vaccine is needed in what the world is talking about right now it is very much on the minds of everyone the number of those vaccines can be impacted by the census data,” said Kristin Fleckenstein, Director of Public Affairs for the Maryland Department of Planning.

  • U.S. Census Bureau: Net International Migration Projected to Fall to Lowest Levels This Decade, Net international migration added 595,000 to the U.S. population between 2018 and 2019, the lowest level this decade. This is a notable drop from this decade’s high of 1,047,000 between 2015 and 2016. The U.S. Census Bureau’s Vintage 2019 population estimates released today show that international migration added about 7.9 million people to the nation’s population since the last census in 2010.   • U.S. Census Bureau: 2020 Census Will Help Policymakers Prepare for the Incoming Wave of Aging Boomers, Baby boomers have changed the face of the U.S. population for more than 70 years and continue to do so as more enter their senior years, a demographic shift often referred to as a “gray tsunami.” Knowing about the number of people age 65 and older is important for tribal, local, state and federal lawmakers. The U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting thousands of workers for temporary jobs available nationwide in advance of the 2020 Census. That includes here in St. Mary’s County.

  • U.S. Census Bureau: Census Bureau Announces Areas to Receive 2020 Census Paper Questionnaires First, The U.S. Census Bureau today released the Mail Contact Strategies Viewer showing how the country will be asked to respond to the 2020 Census. Nearly every household will be invited to respond online, by phone or by mail to the census starting in mid-March 2020. Most areas—about three of every four households—will receive an invitation to respond online (or by phone), while the other households will receive a paper questionnaire along with an invitation to respond online. Regardless of which invitation they receive, all households that have not yet responded will receive a paper questionnaire by mid-April. This map also shows which households will receive English/Spanish bilingual invitations and questionnaires.

    People living in rural and small town America in particular have much at stake in the 2020 census. Unfortunately, census participation tends to be lower in rural areas.
