Basic Function

The current vacancies (i.e., Custodial/Laundry Worker) are located at the Ramsey County Care Center. It is for two part-time positions to include working every other weekend. This position was formerly listed as an Institutional Worker and used for both the Custodial/Laundry Worker and the Food Service Worker. If you are interested in both, you must apply to both positions.  The eligibility list created by this vacancy may be used to hire other vacancies in the department or County.

Depending on assignment, to perform custodial/laundry worker duties in a residential facility (i.e., the Ramsey County Care Center); and perform related duties as assigned.

If an internal candidate is selected, salary will be set in accordance with the personnel rules (i.e., promotion, transfer, or voluntary reduction).

Examples of Work Performed

  1. Prepare for cleaning rounds by filling supply cart with needed cleaning supplies such as cleaners, towels, rags, mops; and replenishment supplies such as soap, toilet paper and paper towels.
  2. Clean, disinfect and polish floors by damp dusting, stripping, wet mopping, scrubbing, waxing and buffing using appropriate supplies and equipment.
  3. Clean assigned areas by collecting and disposing of trash; cleaning, dusting and polishing furniture; vacuuming and cleaning carpets; and washing walls, windows, fixtures, door knobs and handrails.
  4. Shovel snow from walkways and entrances.
  5. Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment used in custodial and laundry duties, and re-orders supplies as needed.
  6. Log all duties completed, and report or issue work repair orders where needed.
  7. Collect and bring used laundry items to the laundry for cleaning by placing in a laundry cart and pushing cart to and from laundry area.
  8. Inspect linens and clothes for holes and other defects; make repairs by operating a sewing machine.
  9. Sort laundry items and wash laundry by operating institutional laundry machines.
  10. Fold, sort, count, mark, stack, pack and deliver finished laundry by placing in a laundry cart and pushing cart to resident areas.
  11. Routinely clean and disinfect laundry areas and equipment.
  12. Maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
 
(The work assigned to a position in this classification may not include all possible tasks in this description and does not limit the assignment of any additional tasks in this classification.  Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required.)

Minimum Qualifications

Education:  Sufficient to provide the knowledge required.
 
Experience:  None.

Certifications/Licensure:  None.
 
Preferred Experience:  Working in a transition and/or long-term care facility, and/or with vulnerable adults; experience using institutional laundry and/or institutional cleaning equipment.

Exam/Screening Process Information

The examination process will consist of the following section with each section weighted as indicated:
 

  • Training and Experience Rating = 100%

The examination for Custodial/Laundry Worker will consist of a training and experience rating, comprised of the questions in the attached supplemental questionnaire. Not all applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will pass the training and experience rating.  The rating on this supplemental questionnaire will depend on your answers to the questions – do not mark "see resume" or "see work history" as a response. Please answer all your questions clearly and completely.  Failure to respond could affect your score and final rank on this examination.
 
Eligible List: The names of all applicants who filed a properly completed application and passed the examination/screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for an employment opportunity as a Custodial/Laundry Worker. This list will be certified to the appointing authority which may use this list to conduct interviews to fill a vacancy. Candidates will remain on the list for two month(s) or until hired, whichever occurs first. A notice will be sent to applicants at the time the eligible list is posted, informing them that the list has been posted and their rank on the list. The department may choose to interview any candidate on the eligible list.

Veteran's Preference: This is a classified position requiring an open, competitive selection process.  Veteran's Preference points will be applied after a candidate passes the examination process.  Applicants who are eligible for veteran's preference should update their veteran's DD214, and other supporting documents, and submit them as an attachment at the time of application.
