Get help from a VA accredited representative or VSO

An accredited attorney, claims agent, or Veterans Service Officer (VSO) can help you file a claim or request a decision review. Learn how to find and appoint one of these types of accredited representatives to help you.

Types of accredited representatives

These professionals are trained and certified in VA claims and decision reviews:

  • Accredited attorney
  • Accredited claims agent
  • Accredited Veterans Service Officer (VSO)

Note: “VSO” can refer to both a Veterans Service Officer and the Veterans Service Organization they work for.

Appoint an accredited representative

First, contact the accredited representative you’d like to appoint to make sure they’re available to help you.

After you’ve confirmed they can work with you, submit one of the PDF forms listed here. The form you’ll need to complete depends on the type of accredited representative you’re appointing.

You can appoint a new accredited representative, or you can replace your current one.

Note: Both you and the accredited representative will need to sign your form.

  • If you’d like to appoint a VSO, fill out an Appointment of Veterans Service Organization as Claimant’s Representative (VA Form 21-22).

  • If you’d like to appoint an accredited attorney or claims agent, fill out an Appointment of Individual as Claimant’s Representative (VA Form 21-22a).

You or the accredited representative can submit your completed form in any of these 3 ways.
