At one minute past midnight on March 29, 1953, the telephone dial system came to Auburn. Before this system was in place, people had to have an operator connect them. The system was so new the telephone company had to instruct people to lift their receiver and listen for the “humming sound”, which was the dial telephone’s way of saying “number please”. The first call on the new system was made by Mrs. Leatha Boylan, who was an Auburn Telephone operator from 1897 until 1935 when she retired.
Chief operator for the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company in Auburn was Miss Hazel Ball, who trained all the operators on the new dial system. Ball was hired in 1917 and was promoted to chief operator in 1921. Of the regular telephone user in Auburn, Ball said, “They are very nice people to deal with.”
The conversion took two years of work, the construction of a new dial building on Lincoln Way, new equipment and the expenditure of $800,000. Direct dial long distance would not come to Auburn until 1958.
