On April 20, 1926, an adventurous group from Auburn began their trek to Truckee by automobile to be the first to make it over Donner Summit by car after the seasonal snow accumulation.
The group in the ‘scout’ car was composed of Verne Ford, the local Studebaker dealer; J.H. Bree, son of T. Bree, the local agent for General Petroleum Co.; W.F. Durfee, an Auburn optometrist; and Henry Gietzen, the owner of the Ann Arbor Bakery in Auburn. This was Verne Ford’s second successful crossing over the snowy summit by automobile. His first crossing was in June of 1922.
In all, there were 10 cars in the convoy with the Studebaker always in front. Several times, the Studebaker got stuck and had to be dug out. The group reached Soda Springs after 10:30 p.m. on April 21 and arrived in Truckee on the evening of the 22nd. The road now open, they were able to make it back to Auburn by the evening of the 23rd. Ford supplied the used “Light Six” Studebaker and General Petroleum Co. provided the gasoline and oil. Learn more about Placer County history by visiting a Placer County museum near you.
