The 1935 Gold Rush Revival celebration - which took place May 31 to June 2 - drew 30,000 people, according to an estimate by the California Highway Patrol.
Bea Dependener, daughter of the late Placer County Deputy Sheriff Frank “Big Dip” Dependener, was elected ‘queen’. The highlight of the three-day event was the parade through Old Town to downtown Auburn on June 1.
Though there was a parade in 1924 celebrating the region’s Gold Rush history, the 1935 Gold Rush Revival kicked off a run of seven successful Gold Rush Revivals that only suspended during the war years (1942-1945).
The event began again in 1946 but by the end of the 1949 celebration, it was obvious it had run out of steam. In 1959, the Gold Rush Revival returned for one year as part of the fair in the Gold Country Fairgrounds, but it only served as a final breath.
We remember these wonderful celebrations through the many photographs in our collection at the Placer County Museums Archives and Research Center, which is open to the public by appointment only.
