Public Hearing and Comment Period scheduled on Southern Pioneer Electric's application to change customer rate design to better align rate design with cost of service

Southern Pioneer Electric Company has filed an application with the Kansas Corporation Commission requesting approval to make customer rate design changes in order to modernize and better align rates to cost of service. The company is proposing a three-part rate design that separates the customer charge, energy delivery/demand charge, and energy charges. The company states the three charges are not new and are part of the current rate structure; however, a three-part rate provides a more accurate representation of the cost to provide service to customers. An increase in the customer charge for residential service and general service small customers is also requested. Rate design changes have also been proposed for large commercial and industrial customers.

The Commission held a public hearing on March 19 to provide Southern Pioneer customers an opportunity to learn more about the proposed rates. The hearing was recorded and is available for viewing on the KCC’s YouTube channel

The public comment period is open through 5 p.m. on May 15. Customers may comment using the link below, call the KCC at 800-662-0027 or send a letter to the KCC Office of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, 1500 SW Arrowhead, Topeka, KS 66604-4027.
