U.S. Coast Guard members conduct a boarding of a fishing vessel in the Eastern Pacific, August 3, 2022. The Coast Guard completed a counter-illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing operation for the first time under the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organization (SPRFMO). The Coast Guard has carried out counter-IUU fishing operations in other Regional Fisheries Management Organization Areas for years. IUU Fishing has replaced piracy as the leading global maritime security threat. The recent operation in support of counter-IUU fishing in the Eastern Pacific Ocean marked the first time in which the Coast Guard conducted high seas boardings and inspections under the SPRFMO.
