On March 31, 1949, it was announced in several newspapers across the nation that U.S. Marine Corps Col. Katherine A. Towle, director of Women Marines, would tour select colleges and universities to introduce the new Marine Corps Officer Training Program for Women.
Towle was born in Towle, an unincorporated community two miles east of Dutch Flat, in 1898. Her grandfather Allen was one of the Towle brothers who started a lumber mill in the town that bears their name. Katherine graduated from University of California, Berkeley in 1920 and later earned a master’s degree from there in 1925. In 1943, during World War II, she enlisted in the Marine Corps. In 1945, she was promoted to lieutenant colonel and named commandant of the Women Marines. In 1948, she was promoted to colonel and was named director of the Women Marines, a position she held until she retired in 1953.
She served as dean of women at UC Berkeley from 1953-1960; assistant dean of students from 1960-1965; and as the first female dean of students from 1965 until she retired in 1966. Towle died in 1986. Katherine A. Towle Residence Hall at UC Berkeley is named in her honor.
