Description

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) is seeking host institutions with projects that require innovative approaches to advance the clean energy transition, to host participants in the Clean Energy Innovator Fellowship program, on-site, for up to two years. Eligible host organizations include electric public utility commissions, municipal and cooperative utilities, and grid operators, such as regional transmission organizations or independent system operators.

Host Institution Mentors

The staff member of an eligible institution who would mentor the fellow and oversee their activities on the project should be the one to submit the application and participate in the matching process.  In addition, the mentor participates in periodic check-ins with DOE throughout the fellow’s appointment.

Please note that only one project may be submitted for fellowship support, per host institution. 

Eligible Host Institutions

  • Electric public utility commissions
  • Municipal or co-operative electric utilities
  • Grid operators (e.g., independent systems operators or regional transmission organizations)

About the Host Application

Mentors will be asked to provide information regarding the host institution and its needs, their proposed project and its level of priority, as well as what skills, knowledge, and experience in a candidate might help lead to project success. Before submitting an application on behalf of the host institution, the mentor will be asked to confirm that they have the internal approval to do so.

Qualifications

A Complete Host Application consists of the following:

  1. Host institution name, address
  2. Name and title of mentor
  3. Description of the project scope
  4. Identification of the skillsets necessary for project execution and the clean energy topics and sectors most relevant to the project
  5. Mentor’s experience and approach to mentoring junior staff
  6. Short background on the host institution, its needs, and where the project fits within the institution's priorities.

Nature of Appointment

The Clean Energy Innovator Fellowship Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) through its Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE).  The program is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). During the appointment, the Innovator will be considered a participant and will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, Oak Ridge Associated Universities, DOE, the Host Institution, or any other office or agency.
