Local libraries announce movie nights throughout November

Posted on:

We announced recently that libraries across Devon are providing warm spaces this winter, as part of our support for people struggling with rising costs of energy and food.

Some are providing community fridges, stocked with surplus food from supermarkets, available to people for free. And many also have coat rails on which people can donate winter coats for others to use.

This week, Libraries Unlimited, which run libraries on our behalf, also announced that six libraries – in Barnstaple, Crediton, Cullompton, Newton Abbot, Seaton, and in St Thomas, Exeter – will be screening films for audiences of all ages throughout November.

Olivia Desborough, Programme Co-ordinator at Libraries Unlimited said:

“Building on the success of the first Libraries Unlimited film festival, which took place in March, we’re keen to make film screenings a regular feature in our libraries.

“With screenings planned for some of our smaller libraries, we’re keen to reach our more remote communities too.

“This autumn, we’re offering another varied and inspiring programme of films, carefully put together by a dedicated team of librarians and with their own communities in mind.

“With the nights drawing in, what better way to spend an evening than in the comfort of your local library, lost in a good film!”

Councillor Roger Croad, our Cabinet Member responsible for the library service said:

“Our libraries have long been hubs within communities that offer a range of services and support for local residents. This autumn and winter we hope that more people will come to use our libraries and spend time in them, especially people who might be concerned about rising costs of energy at home.

“‘Films at the Library’ is another great idea to encourage people in, to enjoy a good few hours of warm company, while watching a good film.

“The intention is to run another programme of films in early 2023.”

The festival is organised by Evolve through Libraries Unlimited, with support from the BFI Film Audience Network with funds from the National Lottery. Evolve is funded by Arts Council England and Exeter City Council.

Tickets cost £3 and are on sale online through the Libraries Unlimited Eventbrite, or in person at each library. A schedule of films being screened in November is on Libraries Unlimited’s website.
