About

Dr. Loy is a professor, veterinary diagnostic microbiologist and faculty supervisor for the bacteriology and molecular diagnostic laboratories in the Nebraska Veterinary Diagnostic Center. His area of focus includes the application of bacterial genomics, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), and PCR to veterinary pathogen detection and characterization. Primarily these efforts are focused on the opportunistic pathogens associated with bovine respiratory and ocular diseases, as well as antimicrobial resistance. He is an instructor in both the Veterinary Science undergraduate curriculum and the Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine.

Professional Responsibilities and Activities

  • Teaching
    Dr. Loy is lead instructor for VMED 688 Public Health and a co-instructor for BIOS/VBMS 441/841 Pathogenic Microbiology.
  • Research
    Dr. Loy's research interests include development and validation of novel molecular and proteomic diagnostic methods, pathogenesis and ecology of opportunistic bovine bacterial respiratory and ocular pathogens and enteric diseases of swine.
  • Outreach
    As a diagnostic microbiologist, Dr. Loy is involved in assisting veterinarians and their clients, livestock producers and other stakeholders in the diagnosis, detection, and prevention of infectious disease. The VDC bacteriology laboratory also provides analysis and data to help inform veterinarian's decisions on prudent treatment of pathogens through performing antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
