At around 10:15 p.m. on Nov. 29, 1932, an explosion shook downtown Roseville. Rain and a car vs. train accident nearby at about the same time led to confusion. It wasn’t until the next morning that the Roseville Police Department and the Placer County Sheriff’s Office were called to the new Sun Light Market, a Chinese grocery store owned by Gee Lum, where the explosion had taken place.
Sheriff Gum discovered six unexploded sticks of dynamite – dynamite he recognized as being part of the theft of three boxes of dynamite from a powder house in Auburn on Nov. 19. The vandal simply placed the dynamite on the floor, which only caused moderate damage.
Gum surmised that the perpetrator was inexperienced. Gee Lum was able to repair the damage in time for his store’s grand opening on Dec. 3, but who was responsible?
The Nov. 23 Roseville and Tribune Register reported that “At a regular meeting of the Roseville Chamber of Commerce held at the city hall Friday evening [Nov. 18th], the chamber went on record as being opposed to the opening of a Chinese store in Roseville.” It was further reported that many of the local grocery clerks organized and voiced their own opposition to the store.
The authorities didn’t believe the opposition to Sun Light Market played a significant part in the act of vandalism. A headline in the Dec. 2, 1932, Roseville Tribune and Register read “Tong War May Be Cause of Blast at New Store,” but the article gave no proof for this assertion.
The store did close soon after, but not because of vandalism. It was announced in January of 1933 that the Busby property, on which the Sun Light Market sat with two other buildings, had been selected as the site for the new Roseville U.S. Post Office. Those responsible for the vandalism were never identified or caught.
