Placer County public safety agencies are advising residents and businesses in the Sierra Nevada and foothill communities to monitor buildings, propane tanks and natural gas lines for signs of excessive loading due to heavy snow. Learn more
North Lake Tahoe visitors:
The National Weather Service is highly discouraging mountain travel this weekend. If you make the choice to visit the North Tahoe region, please be patient. The region has been cut off from supply shipments for several days, which means fuel is low and grocery supplies are limited. We are advising visitors to bring their own emergency supplies and additional fuel to ensure they are prepared for a worst-case scenario. Learn more

Recycling
 Food scraps, yard waste, paper and cardboard recycling is required by the state. We already separate recyclables like plastics and metals from your garbage. The same goes for organic waste, too. As always, you toss, we sort. Learn more

Homelessness
 The Placer County Mobile Temporary Shelter opened in North Auburn just days before the harsh winter weather arrived. Many anticipate the pilot program will stand as an example to other counties on how best to manage homelessness. Watch video

On March 1, 1932, a man in his 80s named William H. Chapman entered Roseville on foot. He told the Roseville Press Tribune that he began his hiking adventure with two much younger men in Milwaukee in July of 1923. According to Chapman, a publication put forth the theory that an elderly man could not outlast younger men on a long, cross-country hike. Apparently, they offered $5,000 to an “aged” person who could perform the feat. The younger men gave up after a few hundred miles. Once Chapman crossed the country, he decided to keep going. By the time he trudged into Roseville, he had been hiking for nearly nine years.
We couldn’t find any evidence of a $5,000 offer for a walking/hiking contest, but there are countless articles between 1923 and 1934 on Chapman and his cross-country adventure. We found articles from 21 different states, including California, and five Canadian provinces – from Florida to British Columbia and California to Maine. Some newspapers claimed Chapman was a Civil War veteran and others that he served under General Custer and in others he was hired by Buffalo Bill as a scout and a few claimed all three. Two of these claims could not be confirmed and are likely just exaggerations meant to drum up support and interest, but a William H. Chapman did serve in the Seventh Calvary under General Custer and was not part of the Battle of Little Bighorn because he was delivering dispatches, which is exactly what Chapman told a few newspapers. Was this the same man who served under General Custer? We don’t know.
Unfortunately, his cross-country adventure ended when he died during a heat wave in Louisville, Kentucky on July 21, 1934. According to news reports, he had logged more than 23,000 miles during his journey.
