On June 26, 1928, 16 immigrants were officially naturalized as United States citizens at a ceremony in the Placer County Courthouse in Auburn.
One of them was Richard William Hemmje from Germany. What made Hemmje’s naturalization special was, according to the June 29, 1928, Lincoln News Messenger, Jack Shannon, a constable from Newcastle, testified to Hemmje’s good character.
Just 10 years prior, Shannon and Hemmje faced each other in the waning days of the Great War from their trenches on the same battlefield in Belgium. Shannon remarked to the Lincoln News Messenger that his regiment “got them and put them out.” But he also added that after he immigrated to the U.S., Hemmje “sometimes meets with the American Legion boys and they like him very much.”
Hemmje arrived at Ellis Island, New York, on Sept. 14, 1922. After being released, he first moved to El Dorado County before settling near Auburn. He was a rancher in the Auburn area until the 1950s when he moved to Lodi. He died in 1963 and is entombed in a mausoleum at the Lodi Memorial Park and Cemetery.
