On Sept.10, 1955, a plane circled the Quonset Village Motel in Colfax before crash landing alongside Highway 40. The plane flipped over and slid to a stop on its top.
The pilot, Richard Kendell of Alameda, was not seriously injured.
He told The Colfax Record that he was flying from Sacramento to Marysville but followed the wrong highway. By the time he realized his error, he was out of gas.
The wings of the plane as well as the propeller were broken in the accident. Traffic on Highway 40 was snarled for a while as people slowed down or even stopped to look at the plane. The wrecked aircraft was eventually towed to the Record’s parking lot.
Quonset huts were first developed for the U.S. Navy in 1941. They were lightweight and easy to assemble. After the war, the U.S. military sold its surplus of Quonset huts to the public and some, like those of the Quonset Village Motel, became temporary and even permanent living spaces, while others were used for storage and various outbuildings.
