On Dec. 8, 1957, the Roseville High School Science Club joined the Space Race by attempting to launch a rocket they had built. The rocket only climbed 3 feet above the launchpad before the nose cone separated from the rocket and the craft spiraled out of control and crashed to the ground.
The Space Race began Oct. 4 when the Soviet Union successfully launched their artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, into orbit around the Earth. The event both thrilled and terrified the world and kicked off the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union that later culminated with the Moon Race and the successful Apollo Program.
In 1957, the Roseville High School Science Club fared a little better than the United States Navy, which unsuccessfully tried to launch Vanguard TV-3 just two days earlier on Dec. 6. Vanguard also only reached an altitude of around 3 feet, but it exploded in a fireball. Both the U.S. and the Roseville High School Science Club went back to the drawing board. On Feb. 1, 1958, the U.S. successfully launched the Explorer 1 satellite into orbit, and later that same month, the Roseville High School Science Club successfully launched several rockets.
