DID YOU KNOW?
Credit by Demonstrated Mastery
Did You Know?
Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (GCS-M-001.8) allows students to earn course credit in a manner that does not require specific seat-time requirements.
The State Board of Education defines “mastery” as a student’s command of course material at a level that demonstrates a deep understanding of the content standards and the ability to apply his or her knowledge of the material. “Credit by demonstrated mastery” is the process by which LEAs shall, based upon a body-of-evidence, award a student credit in a particular course without requiring the student to complete classroom instruction for a certain amount of seat time.
CDM is a very responsive instructional practice that supports differentiating for and accelerating students who have a clearly expressed need.
If you are thinking about Credit by Demonstrated Mastery or, already have a plan and team in place and need a refresher, please check out the following:

Get to Know You Charter Agreement: Criminal Background Checks
Criminal History Checks. -
(1) If the local board of education of the local school administrative unit in which a charter school is located has adopted a policy requiring criminal history checks under G.S. 115C-332, then the board of directors of each charter school located in that local school administrative unit shall adopt a policy mirroring the local board of education policy that requires an applicant for employment to be checked for a criminal history, as defined in G.S. 115C-332. Each charter school board of directors shall apply its policy uniformly in requiring applicants for employment to be checked for a criminal history before the applicant is given an unconditional job offer. A charter school board of directors may employ an applicant conditionally while the board is checking the person's criminal history and making a decision based on the results of the check. If the local board of education adopts a policy providing for periodic checks of criminal history of employees, then the board of directors of each charter school located in that local school administrative unit shall adopt a policy mirroring that local board of education policy. A board of directors shall indicate, upon inquiry by any other local board of education, charter school, or regional school in the State as to the reason for an employee's resignation or dismissal, if an employee's criminal history was relevant to the employee's resignation or dismissal.

Doing What Works, Research-Based Instructional Practices and Resources
Doing What Works (DWW) is a website sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. The goal of DWW is to create an online library of resources that may help teachers, schools, districts, states and technical assistance providers implement research-based instructional practice.
Charter Schools & Athletics Need to Knows
The Regional Education Facilitators monitor and guide Public School Units (PSU) as they provide quality induction programs that nurture and support the professional growth of a beginning teacher. The work of this team is to ensure that State Board of Education policy TCED-016 is understood and implemented at the local level. Program webinars for beginning teacher coordinators, yearly Beginning Teacher Support collaborative meetings, annual Peer Reviews with critical friends, and continuous professional development allow each stakeholder to stay abreast of current policy while building networks and professional relationships. These networks establish avenues for support from teacher preparation programs through the three year induction period in an LEA/Charter. A five-year program monitoring cycle ensures compliance with State Board policy for induction and evaluation requirements. Program monitoring is not intended to be punitive yet to provide avenues for assistance and growth as each PSU in the state of North Carolina works toward meeting state guidelines. Data collected from these monitoring visits serve as a catalyst for support in terms of technical assistance and professional development.

Power School Need to Knows
Important reminder prior to running your enrollment lottery
Dear school leaders and vendors who assist with PowerSchool or the enrollment lottery, please note you must enter student records individually into PowerSchool. Do not import batch data.
As Charters begin to prepare for the new school year, NCDPI would like to remind PowerSchool admins and third-party management companies that students should not be imported into the system. Importing student records bypasses our UID integration and customization, therefore all students should be entered individually, following the steps providing in this Quick Reference Document. Importing student records bypasses our UID integration and creates duplicate records in PowerSchool if the student has an existing record in the UID system. We currently have an overwhelming amount of duplicate records and clean up of duplicate records could take an extended length of time.

McKinney Vento Homeless Children & Youth Assistance Act Need to Knows
The McKinney-Vento Education of Homeless Children and Youth Assistance Act is the primary piece of legislation dealing with the education of children and youth experiencing homelessness. The Act is also known as Title IX, Part A of the Every Students Succeeds Act. Each charter school must designate a McKinney Vento liaison and support the education and training of school staff around the law.

Artist's Haven & Poet's Corner
Paul Gauguin Les Alyscamps, 1888
The Road Not Taken
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
