Work starts to boost leisure facilities for people in North Kirklees
Building works for a new £15m leisure centre are due to commence this month (18 May) that will hugely improve the leisure offer for the residents in the Spen Valley.
Construction firm Kier will start working on site this month when the foundations for the new Spen Valley Leisure Centre will be laid.
What will the facilities include?
The Spen Valley Leisure Centre facilities will include: an 8 lane, 25 metre main pool; an activity pool 20m x 10m with moveable floor; spectator seating in the pool areas; large fitness suite; two fitness studios with flexibility for other use; and a cycling studio. There will also be two changing villages which will include family cubicles, baby change and large team changing areas.
What measures are in place to safeguard employees?
To safeguard employees and the local community, Kier will be adhering to the Construction Leadership Council’s Site Operating Procedures which are based on the guidance issued by Public Health England.
Leader of the Council, Cllr Shabir Pandor said:

The leisure centre will become a major asset for the local community, attracting more visitors into Kirklees and will help to create a sustainable economy. When will the new facilities be open for use?
The existing fitness suite, studios and athletics track will remain closed for use for the duration of the Covid19 lockdown. The new facilities will be open for use in winter 2021.
