WELCOMING YOU BACK – WITH SAFETY TOP OF MIND. At the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites, we are so excited to welcome back visitors to our locations. We hope you’re as ready as we are to learn, explore and enjoy the summer and fall! As you plan your visit, we want you to know that we are doing everything we can to ensure your visit is safe, while still allowing you to have a great experience. In our galleries, you’ll enjoy a tour guided by directional signage to ensure your group can visit each experience with proper social distancing. In our programs, we’ll take you outside into the fresh air to experience the Indiana State Museum in a way you maybe haven’t before – through nature-based and outdoor programming. At our historic sites, enjoy a day trip with your family to explore the open-air gardens at T.C. Steele or Lanier Mansion, or take a nature hike at Limberlost, Angel Mounds or Gene Stratton-Porter. For indoor excursions, tours will have limited numbers at our historic sites, and we’ll carefully monitor capacity at all our locations every day, including the museum in Indianapolis. Your experience at our locations may look a little different in coming months – but we promise it won’t be any less memorable. We hope to see you soon. 2

Located in White River State Park in the heart of downtown Indianapolis, you’ll find a place to explore big questions and learn the story of Indiana – from the ancient forces that shaped the land to Hoosier icons of the modern day. Throughout our galleries, there’s truly something for every interest. FIRST FLOOR EXPERIENCES Legacy Theater Discover the moving stories of African American Hoosiers who helped shape Indiana’s past and continue to influence our lives. Birth of the Earth Learn how a mix of constant change and bold transformations shaped the Hoosier state we know today. See a moon rock, explore an 8-foot interactive globe and more. Ancient Seas Believe it or not, oceans once covered Indiana. Explore various touch drawers, see fossils and learn how those ancient animals helped build the bedrock beneath our feet. Frozen Reign: A State of Change Journey through the Ice Age, beginning with a trip through a chilly ice tunnel. See how you size up against various prehistoric animals, wind your way through replicas of ancient caves and go toe-to-tusk with the real skeletons of Ice Age giants. First Nations: The Story of Indiana’s Founding People Learn about the vibrant communities built by Indiana’s Native Americans and how traditions are alive today. See rare artifacts, sniff spices used in cooking, enjoy interactive video experiences and more. Natural Regions Indiana’s landscape has changed drastically over time, affecting the lives of animals that call the state home. Hear the sounds of different frogs and birds, see replicas of Indiana’s environment through time and learn about threats to native plants and animals today. R.B. Annis Naturalist’s Lab (TEMPORARILY CLOSED) Explore Indiana’s natural history through your senses by using microscopes, exploring touch drawers, participating in demonstrations and more. The Naturalist’s Lab is a place for hands-on exploration of different sciences. IMAX® Theater Featuring Academy Award-winning IMAX® technology and a six-story screen, the IMAX Theater offers audiences both 2D and 3D IMAX films, as well as contemporary Hollywood movies. SECOND FLOOR EXPERIENCES Contested Territory Learn about the turbulent time in Indiana’s history as it moved from frontier to statehood. Enter the scene as the Treaty of Greenville is negotiated and hear Little Turtle’s powerful speech spoken in the Miami language. 19th State Step into pioneer Indiana and be transported to a world of oxen, farm tools and log cabins. See rare artifacts from Abraham Lincoln’s family, and find spaces where you can practice chopping wood and sawing a log. The Hoosier Way Learn how Indiana forged its identity after the pioneer era by exploring real artifacts from this time of transformation. See artifacts from Indiana’s first African American settlements, objects from the Civil War and more. Crossroads of America Explore the technological advancements in the era of railroads and how those improvements – like Wooton desks and automobiles, along with the use of coal and gas – changed transportation and commerce in Indiana. Enterprise Indiana Experience American milestones such as World War I, Prohibition and suffrage through the eyes of Hoosiers who were there. Get up-close to a Stutz automobile, and learn the stories of Indiana’s immigrants. Global Indiana Discover Indiana’s global impact, from World War II and pop culture to Hoosier life today. See war reporter Ernie Pyle’s typewriter, basketball icon Bobby Plump’s backboard, political signs from one of Indiana’s first Latina elected officials and more. American Originals Visit a room filled with the faces of 20th-century Hoosiers. The stories of Indiana legends – like Gus Grissom, James Dean and Florence Henderson – are told in this unique space.

IN OUR NEWEST EXPERIENCES THIRD FLOOR EXPERIENCES FIX: Heartbreak and Hope Inside Our Opioid Crisis (open through Feb. 7, 2021) The United States is in the middle of an opioid crisis – and the Indiana State Museum invites you to learn more about it. Explore the science and biology behind opioid use disorder, then discover true, personal stories from people affected. Walk inside a fabric brain, see artistic responses to the crisis and find hope in learning that recovery is possible as we all work together toward finding solutions.

Cause and Æffect: Art That Speaks Out (open through Aug. 2) Women have a long history of fighting for their rights. This summer, explore artworks born of that activism. Discover the artists behind each piece and learn about the causes they continue to fight for. See works inspired by debate over topics like the death penalty or the environment, then take a moment for self-reflection and an opportunity to react.

Very Eric Carle: A Very Hungry, Quiet, Lonely, Clumsy, Busy Exhibit (open through Sept. 7) Step into the pages of Eric Carle’s colorful picture books in this play-and-learn experience. Become the Very Hungry Caterpillar and follow his path, weave a web with the Very Busy Spider, compose a night symphony with the Very Quiet Cricket and more. Then, create artwork using Eric Carle’s materials and techniques, and enjoy a gallery of prints from his “Very” book series. 96th Annual Hoosier Salon (open Aug. 29 – Oct. 25) See artwork from Hoosier artists in this annual competition. The show is Indiana’s longest-running art exhibition and is considered to be the preeminent juried exhibition of Indiana art by Indiana artists. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood: A Grr-ific Exhibit (open Sept. 19 – Jan. 3, 2021) Enter the world of Daniel Tiger and friends to explore the neighborhood. Through immersive experiences, visitors collaborate to solve problems, use their imaginations to transform their surroundings, and play along with Daniel’s singable strategies as they learn life’s little lessons. Become one of the characters and step on stage to act, express yourself through unusual instruments, or visit the Thank You Tree to leave your own thank-you note.

The program, which was started by The Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Museum of Indianapolis in 2004, brings together museums across the state of Indiana to make fun family learning available to more Hoosier families. SEPT. 24 – OUR NEIGHBORHOOD Little ones will explore their emotions and how to be a good neighbor with help from friend Daniel Tiger. CAMP in a BOX Are you looking for a fun, hands-on experience for your child from the comfort of your own home during fall break? Camp in a Box engages your child in learning through a variety of hands-on design challenges, step-by-step experiments, and art creations. 1 to 2:30 p.m., Oct. 3 $7/person, 25% discount for members In the midst of the current opioid crisis, Young Actors Theatre (YAT) takes hope from our community’s young people and from the knowledge that students listen best to messages from their peers and presents ”Love Over Dose.” This original play, by youth and for youth, addresses the opioid crisis and helps prevent drug abuse in middle- and high-school students. “Love Over Dose” shows young audiences that they are capable of making healthy, informed decisions for themselves and inspires them to do just that. This year, the competition will be spread over three days as artists compete in a variety of mediums the week leading up to Saturday, Sept. 12. Step back in time with a visit to Indianaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s territorial capitol and tour the original building where Indianaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first legislators met. This five-session program series focuses on the history of American political parties, and especially on national and presidential politics. The 2020 enhancements of the Whitewater Canal State Historic Site were made possible with the generous support of the State of Indiana and the Indiana Office of Tourism Development.

VISIT THE METAMORA GRIST MILL

Begin your trip to the Whitewater Canal State Historic Site by experiencing the Metamora Grist Mill like never before. Discover the mill’s history from its beginnings to today, and see for yourself how the mill grinds corn into flour, meal and grits – just as it has since the 1800s! Then, try milling grains yourself with a hand-powered grinder or learn how millers secured their sacks of flour by trying your hand at tying a miller’s knot. Children can explore our brand-new transportation discovery space. Learn how Hoosiers used to move from here to there on our wooden canal and train table, chart your course throughout Indiana with an interactive map or pack a model canal boat full of crates and merchandise before its journey to Cincinnati.

SEE THE NATION’S ONLY KNOWN WOODEN AQUEDUCT

This unique structure carries the canal across Duck Creek. Engineers designed this aqueduct to carry the canal and its boats above the creek. This is the only known wooden covered aqueduct still operating in the United States. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

EXPLORE THE HIKING TRAILS

Starting at the Whitewater Canal State Historic Site, walk along the hiking trails that lead you down the canal route. These trails will take you through historic Metamora and lead you to the Duck Creek Aqueduct (about .5 miles) and eventually the “Twin Locks” (an additional 2.6 miles). 53
