On May 19, 1898, three trainloads of soldiers passed through Auburn on their way to the Philippines to fight in the Spanish-American War. There were about 1,800 soldiers on the seemingly endless chain of train cars, and they were showered with flower bouquets from the patriotic ladies of Auburn. The Nebraska volunteers, who were in the first train, carried with them a live bald eagle, which was a gift presented to them by statesman William Jennings Bryan.
The Spanish-American War broke out in the wake of the USS Maine explosion in the Havana Harbor in Cuba on Feb. 15, 1898. The explosion killed 268 American sailors. This event did not directly lead to armed conflict, but the simmering aftermath, fueled by “yellow journalism,” forced the countries down a path where peace did not live.
Spain declared war on the United States on April 23 in response to the U.S. naval blockade of the island country. On April 25, the U.S. retroactively declared war on Spain, noting that a state of war existed between the two nations on April 21, the day the blockade began. Hostilities ended on Aug. 12, 1898. After tense negotiations, both nations signed the Treaty of Paris on Dec. 10, 1898. The U.S. gained the Spanish colonies of the Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico and Cuba became a U.S. protectorate.
