  • The CDC estimates that at least 30% of antibiotics prescribed in the outpatient setting are unnecessary, and up to 50% may be inappropriate! Recent data shows that Iowa ranks 34th in the nation regarding the number of outpatient antibiotic prescriptions per 1,000 population. Appropriate antibiotic prescribing means antibiotics are only prescribed when needed, and the right antibiotic is selected and prescribed at the right dose and for the right duration. Antibiotic stewardship is the organized effort to measure and improve how antibiotics are prescribed by clinicians and used by patients. Improving antibiotic prescribing in the outpatient setting involves implementing effective strategies to modify prescribing practices to align them with evidence-based recommendations for diagnosis and management. Join the Iowa HHS Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI)Program on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. for a FREE webinar. At the end of this webinar, the participants should be better able to: • Explain the importance of outpatient antimicrobial stewardship. • Describe the principles of outpatient antimicrobial stewardship. • Apply the principles of antimicrobial stewardship to commonly encountered outpatient infections in the pediatric population.
