On June 22, 1959, demolition of the Historic Orleans Hotel in Auburn began. Efforts by local preservationists to save the hotel from destruction failed. The hotel, like a big part of Old Town Auburn, sat in the way of progress. The construction of Interstate 80 cut a wide swath through Auburn and the planned Maple Street exit was perilously close to the hotel, but it was a Shell gas station that spelled doom for the historic structure.
The original Orleans Hotel was located on Washington Street somewhere behind where the fire house sits today. It burned down in the fire that swept through Auburn in 1855. A second Orleans Hotel was consumed by fire in 1863. By 1870, the third Orleans Hotel had been erected on Main Street and there it remained until demolition began the week of June 22, 1959.
