Although they didn’t know it at the time, patrons of the Pastime Theatre in Lincoln were viewing history on the screen Aug. 22, 1914.
According to the Lincoln News Messenger of Aug. 28:
The Pastime Theatre is well named. It is a pastime to go there for the management always has up-to-date and interesting photo plays in addition to the series they put on. “Perils of Pauline” shown last Saturday [Aug. 22nd], continues to hold the interest of the movie patrons and was a great installment. It was played to a big audience. “The Tragedy of Whispering Creek” a three-reel drama, was also very good.
“The Perils of Pauline” was a 20-episode serial from 1914. In 2008, it was selected by the Library of Congress for the United States National Film Registry as being culturally, historically and aesthetically significant. “The Tragedy of Whispering Creek” is a 1914 western that starred Lon Chaney. The Deutsche Kinemathek film archive in Germany possesses a print of this film making it the oldest surviving Lon Chaney motion picture.
Lon Chaney’s brother, George Chaney, owned a ranch in Applegate and his son, Lon Chaney, Jr., owned a ranch in nearby Cool.
