Accelerating Climate Resilience Solutions

Climate & Carbon Management Research & Engagement

The Livermore Lab Foundation is proud to partner with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) to address the necessary technology, policy, and community solutions to achieve ambitious carbon neutrality goals.

A nationwide report of how the United States can achieve net-zero by 2050

Roads to Removal is a national scale analysis of carbon dioxide removal required to achieve a net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) economy in the United States by 2050.

The report highlights 22 geographical regions. All have a story. All have an opportunity.

The Roads to Removal report is jointly sponsored by the US Department of Energy, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO), Advanced Research Projects Agency—Energy (ARPA-E), and Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) and ClimateWorks and features research and collaborations from 68 authors at 13 academic institutions.

In 2024, thanks to funding support from Breakthrough Energy, ClimateWorks Foundation and Grantham Foundation for the Protection of the Environment, LLF, along with our partner Climate Now, will host a series of free community symposiums to share the science and report conclusions in Roads to Removal. Stay informed by signing up on the Roads to Removal website.

Community Outreach

To help address one of the greatest environmental challenges of our times, LLF is working with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s Carbon Initiative and other partners to advance technology solutions and inform critical policy and community decisions to achieve California’s carbon neutrality goals.

Since 2020, LLF has partnered with LLNL and California educators to develop classroom resources for high schoolers to learn about carbon neutrality goals, carbon dioxide removal solutions, and how they can engage.

Identifying a Path to Carbon Neutrality

Navigating California's Regulatory Framework

The costs of carbon dioxide capture, transportation and geologic storage projects and how California can best serve communities, the economy and the climate.

With support from the ClimateWorks Foundation, LLF funded a groundbreaking LLNL study that identified a robust suite of technologies to help California become carbon neutral – and ultimately carbon negative – by 2045.

To ensure a timely and and responsible approach to the State’s carbon capture and storage opportunities, LLF funded a comprehensive follow-on report to help understand the current regulatory environment and recommend efficiencies.
