In the March 16, 1895, Placer Herald, it was announced that E.C. Snowden purchased the New City Hall building in Auburn (Old Town) for $6,500. Though named “City Hall” the building was never a government building. Snowden, a pharmacist in Auburn whose pharmacy was on the corner of Commercial and Main streets (now Commercial Street and Lincoln Way), owned and lived in the white house that overlooks Old Town Auburn to this day.
R.J. Hancock purchased a hardware store that operated in the City Hall building in 1898. Unfortunately, the building would be one of many casualties of a fire that swept through Auburn (Old Town) on July 22, 1905. Hancock would go on to reopen his successful hardware store on Lincoln Way later that same year.
