Party games and postcards once ruled Halloween night!
On Oct. 17, 1927, the Neighbors of Woodcraft, a fraternal organization in Auburn, hosted a Halloween party promising mystery eats and card games (likely bridge) for $.35 per person.
Halloween parties were a common fundraiser for fraternal organizations in the early 20th century, as tradition had yet to embrace the practice of trick-or-treating. Teens with nothing else to do on Halloween often delved into mischief. Sometimes they engaged in harmless pranks, and sometimes it was pure vandalism. Community-based trick-or-treating began in the U.S. in the 1930s and helped sway kids and teens to find a better and safer way to celebrate.
Early in the 20th century, Halloween postcards were very popular. Some of these cards depicted traditions of the era, such as different ways young people might discover whom they would marry. If you’d like to see some of the cards in our collection, please visit the museum inside the Historic Courthouse in Auburn where there is a scavenger hunt for kids. If they find all the Halloween and Fall postcards on the first-floor museum spaces, they can get two pieces of candy!
