On Nov. 15, 1913, 57-year-old Peter Gasperi of Lincoln was rushed to the Placer County Hospital in Auburn suffering from “hydrophobia,” which was a term used for rabies. Despite medical attention, Gasperi died that afternoon. It was rare, even in 1913, for people to die from rabies. Peter Gasperi’s remains were sent to UC Davis so scientists there could study his brain to see the effects of the disease on humans.
Gasperi contracted the disease while caring for a dog that had been acting “peculiar.” He pried the dog’s mouth open to see if it had something stuck in its throat, but he had a cut on his hand that came into contact with the dog’s saliva. Gasperi was a quarryman from Lincoln and left behind a wife and three children.
But his death, as sad as it was for his family, may have been oddly karmic. In the Oct. 3, 1913, Lincoln News Messenger, it was reported that “Peter Gasperi, the excitable and evidently ill-tempered quarryman who was arrested recently on a charge of cruelty to animals…pleaded guilty and was fined $25 by Justice of the Peace Sparks.” Gasperi was caught beating an old horse.
