Regional Face to Face

Support Groups

Obesity UK worked with Public Health England to deliver a pilot Community Champions Programme across the country in 2014/15. The programme aimed to support people to engage in physical activity and healthy eating with a significant focus on the emotional well-being of group members. Evaluation of the programme has underscored the impact of regional support groups on encouraging and supporting health behaviours such as physical activity and healthy eating. It was also noted that the design and success of these groups has led to further impacts that include meeting new people and developing new friendships.

As a result, Obesity UK now have two volunteer regional support groups. These groups provide peer-to-peer support for members of the community with obesity. They offer ‘expert by experience’ knowledge, creating a two-way dialogue between members of the community, health professionals and organisations in their locality. Obesity UK are working on further opportunities to develop regional groups across the UK with a focus on ensuring they are sustainable.
