Their Fate Lies in Our Hands - Migratory Birds

Donation protected
Dear Family, Friends, & Fellow Nature Lovers,

My name is Jim McGinity and I am passionate about bird conservation, research and education.  Every spring and fall, billions of songbirds migrate between North America and the tropics.  They face a number of challenges to their survival along the journey.   The goal of my project is to study the migratory birds that travel through Florida and educate the public on ways they can help them.

Project Summary:

·      The project started in 2012 banding migratory birds at Hammock Park in Dunedin, Florida.  The project has recently moved to Caladesi Island State Park to better represent the birds migrating through West Central Florida.

·      The focus of the project is to study the songbirds that stop over to feed and rest in our area.

·      Questions like “What species use this park?” and “How long do they stay to refuel in this natural area?” drives the research.

·      Since the beginning of the project, we have banded over 1,000 birds of 58 different species by banding only one day per week for six weeks each spring and fall season.

·      In addition to changing the location to right along the coastline, ideally I would like to increase the number of days each week that we band.  This will allow us to collect more data and better represent the migration through our part of the state.

Project Objectives:

1.    Support on-going migratory bird banding research on a local barrier island (Caladesi Island).

2.    Develop and deliver educational programs throughout the Tampa Bay area

In addition to moving the banding project, I decided to create a social purpose organization to increase the impact of this project.  The organization is called “Florida Avian Conservation” and will focus on working to conserve these special migratory birds through research and education programs.  I will have more information about the organization posted on the blog in the near future.  The programs held throughout the area will educate citizens about bird migration and the ways that they can help these birds to have a better chance at survival.

How You Can Help:

This is where you come in.  As a person who cares about the natural world and the birds in it, you can help me, and my fledgling organization, really take flight and make a difference!  The funds that I raise through this campaign will go to support the ambitious research project out on Caladesi Island State Park and to help build capacity to conduct educational programs.

Funds will be used in the following ways:

·      To purchase more mist nets, poles, related equipment;

·      Support for the boat/volunteers to get out to the island to do this work.

·      Train volunteers

·      Equipment to develop and deliver education programs

Since I have largely self-funded this research project since 2012, I really need your financial support to keep this work going.   Even small amounts can add up to make a big difference.  With your help I will be able to maintain and expand the project.

If you feel moved to help support this initiative, please make a contribution so that this dream can become a reality. Thank you for your support of our migratory birds and making a difference.  It truly is in our hands!

With gratitude,
